A well organized demonstration to refute the claim that the Skagit River was unfit for recreational paddling and not navigable in any way. 46 canoes and 20 kayaks successfully negotiated the river!

The event was a fun event intended to be a staged protest, pressing the point that this area should be designated a provincial park, by the BC New Democratic Party of the day. The area was designated as a Recreational Area, but not a Provincial Park as this young environmental movement had hoped. Media and government cabinet ministers were invited and were taken down the river!

The Canoe-In put-in was at what is now called Strawberry Flats, approximately six kilometers above the reservoir. Well over one hundred people were in the area that day and it’s beauty was showcased by media in the coming days both in British Columbia and in Seattle.
